
Drawing at The Met - Materials List

The Met has strict guidelines on materials they allow. Please follow their guidance.
Pencils
The Met Museum allows only pencil sketching – no charcoal, ink or markers. *** Good Pencil Brands are Derwent Graphic, Cretacolor, Stadtler, and Faber Castell. (or pencils of similar quality)
It is recommended you purchase 5 pencils
- Pencil graded B / H-B / H / 2-H / 4-H (these are are soft graphite and gives dark lines)
And
- Gray kneaded eraser or other type of eraser
- Pencil sharpener with case for shavings or bring a baggie
- 1 pad of drawing paper, 11 x 14 or larger if preferred. Strathmore is a good brand or choose something similar
Required Seating
- Small, light-weight folding “camp” stool. Art stores or sporting goods stores carry (as does Amazon). The Met guards will not allow larger beach chairs or similar.
Optional Supplies
- A clipboard in the same size as your drawing pad
- Artist’s tape or equivalent
- Two large binder clips
- Dedicated bag for easy transport of materials to/from museum
